The college is located in a semi urban area
away from the mainstream life of the town The college
being the highest seat of learning in a vast area is
looked upon as a centre of learning.
Curricular
Aspects
Rangia College offers a wide range of
programmes under three faculties – Arts, Science and
Commerce. The offered programmes include 22 subjects at UG
level with 17 of them offering Major courses. While
students enrolled in a program are not entitled to enjoy
flexibility in respect of time frame and non-core options,
elective options are available and horizontal mobility
within and across a discipline is allowed to a limited
extent depending upon the satisfaction of the authorities
concerned.
With the thrust area of the
college curriculum as designed by the Gauhati University
mainly centered on generation and transmission of
knowledge, the onus of fulfilling the social
responsibility like creating general awareness on the
problems of illiteracy, health and hygiene etc. is left to
the extension education activities of the college.
The college strictly adheres to
the curriculum designed and modeled for different courses
under GU, and is fully aware of the methodology adopted in
preparing the courses. A Self-financing course has been
introduced in general for Computer literacy programme and
Yoga and Meditation self-financing programme has also been
introduced. Further, the college has endeavored to sign
MOU with NGOs for exchange of socio-economic and cultural
programmes. With the majority of the students of the
college having a very weak socio-economic fabric, it is
felt that students by and large would have been more
benefited through a series of vocational training in the
nature of IGP programmes. With this end in view the
college initiated a number of activities (Seminar,
training camp) in this direction last year
Teaching –Learning process
i) A good number of students from the
region as well as from outside seek admission into
different faculties offered by the college. The admission
process is transparent. It is done with the help of an
admission committee. Relaxation for SC/ST candidates is as
per rule of the college. The admitted students offering
Major courses are further required to appear in selection
tests conducted by respective departments.
ii) The methodology adopted in case of
teaching, learning experience is two-pronged (a) Classroom
lectures by teachers who make an in-depth analysis of the
information about the subject matter try to encourage
inquisitiveness in the students and (b) learning through
practical experiments. Here the students learn and get
practical experiences through laboratory experiment,
fieldwork, projects and excursions etc. Further the
methodology is supplemented to some extent by seminars,
group discussions etc.
iii) The visual aids commonly used are the
black boards. A few departments adopt the teaching
technique with the help of charts and models also. The
overhead projector is used only in case of departmental
seminar presentation. Students’ knowledge and skills for a
particular programme are tested through the departmental
unit tests in various units of the syllabi of the
programme. iv)Moreover, students are asked to deliver
seminar lectures and take up certain subject-specific
project works particularly in the science subjects
and Economics. These help in assessing the knowledge and
skills of the students in their chosen fields.
iv) Advanced learners are encouraged by
providing special attention in library and laboratory
facilities and fieldwork and excursion activities. They
are involved in project works, leadership of the group
discussion, excursion, field study etc. Such learners are
involved in guiding the new learners in different
activities
Details of Teaching Plan: Rangia
College implemented teaching plan for a
planned teaching-evaluation process from the academic
session 2002-03. Each department prepares a detailed
teaching plan in consultation with the faculty members of
the department and gets it approved by the
Principal.
Details of implementation: At the
beginning of the academic session each department is
required to prepare a teaching plan in accordance with the
guidance provided by the Principal. Accordingly the course
content is allotted to the respective teachers with the
broad based idea to divide the same in three units.
Measures are taken up as per the Principle adopted.
The Academic Committee of the college
comprising a group of teachers looks after the academic
atmosphere of the college and monitors all related
activities and takes appropriate remedial measures for
imparting quality education to the students. The academic
administration is fully under the control of the Principal
with the Vice-Principal giving full assistance.
The Principal also utilizes the forum of
the Heads of the departments to take up any academic issue
on urgent basis.
The Heads of the departments are entrusted
with the responsibilities of managing the affairs of the
respective departments. The office staff manned by
assistants of different categories assists the Principal
and secretary in smooth running of the academic and
administrative business.
A qualified librarian guides the
activity of the library with the assistance of a staff
comprising an Assistant librarian, a library assistant and
a number of bearers.
Evaluation
It is worthwhile to mention that the
college has made an honest endeavor to introduce internal
evaluation technique through unit tests in all the
departments. The teaching and learning process is
not rigid and the teachers exercise academic flexibility. |
