May 2008- April 2009   

1) Under the aegis of Women’s Studies and Research Cell Anti-Tobacco Day was observed:

Anti-tobacco Day was observed on 31st May 2008 at Rangia College in collaboration with NESPYM. A large number of students, teachers and official staff have put signatures indicating their consent not to have tobacco in future.

2) Popular Talk organized by the Science Faculty:

A popular talk was organized by the Science Faculty of the College on the topic Genographic Project on 2nd June, 2008. The Resource Person Mr. Arun Kumar, JRF, Dept. of Immunology, Madurai Kamraj University delivered a lecture on the topic sponsored by National Geographic. He elaborated on sampling of DNA & Human Migration. He collected some samples from different ethnic, clan and caste groups like Bodo-Kachari, Sarma & Kalita people. Nitul Deka, Research Scholar, Dept. of Anthropology, G.U assisted the resource person.

3) Activities of IGNOU Centre (Report published in the Assam Tribune, July 1st, 2008):

In a bid to facilitate and benefit the students from IGNOU courses, Rangia College, a partner institute, has introduced seven different value-based courses including degree programme on social works (BSW) under the umbrella of IGNOU. Besides, Certificate Courses on Business Skill, Laboratory Techniques, Environmental Studies, Human Rights, Computing and Teaching of English have also been introduced.

4) Popular Talk: (organized by the Department of Botany):

The department of Botany organized a on the topic “Biotechnology- its Scope & Application” for the students of Rangia College on 23rd August, 2008. Sanjeev Karmakar, an alumnus of the department, presently working in DRL, Tezpur, was the Resource Person of the said talk He discussed about the Biotechnology in detailed with latest information in national & international level. 

5) Chemistry Olympiad:

The 7th Chemistry Olympiad was held at the college which was conducted by Nityananda Barman and Dr. Dwijendra Nath Deka on 14th September, 2008. All together 54 students from various category (IX-14, X- 08, XI-14, XII-18) of different institutions were appeared in the examination. From this center, Md Khalliulah of Class XII from Pragmatic Academic got 2nd position and in Class IX category, Manas Jyoti Sarma from Sankardev Sishu Niketan got 6th position. All together 10 students got merit certificate in class IX, X and XI category.

6) Seminar on Large Hadron Collider:

 Under the aegis of Dept. of Botany and Information-cum-Career Guidance Cell of Rangia College, a day-long seminar on “Large Hadron Collider” (LHC) was held on 23rd September, 2008 at the college premises. As the resource person Manoj Kumar Sinha of the Department of Physics elaborated and discussed the sole theme before the gathering. Explaining various aspects and effects of collision of two oppositely directed proton beam in the speed of light, the resource person highlighted the same through interactive slides shows. Later, participants including students and teachers were appraised about scientific phenomenon like Big Bang theory, Boson and Quark particles. The Department of Botany with the help of ICGC, Rangia College organized a day long Seminar on Largr Hadron Collider (LHC) on 23rd Sept, 2008 at the college premises. The detail report of the seminar published in the Newspaper mentioned above. Departmental Seminar was organized by the department of Botany for the advanced learners in the session 2008-2009. All total 9(nine) No. of seminars on the various topics related to GU syllabus were delivered by all 3(Three) year major students of the department guided by the teachers of the dept. Other students & teachers participated in the seminar which was compulsory to them.

7) Activities of ICGC and Placement Cell:

Under the initiative of ICGC and Placement Cell conducted a campus recruitment workshop at the college campus. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Aircel Service on Oct. 4th, 2008. Out of the 80 numbers of participant students, initially 13 participants were selected for interview in the Aircel Head Office, Guwahati and finally 6 applicants were selected for the post of Customer Care Executive. Followings are the candidates those who are doing the job presently as Customer Care Executive in Aircel Service Centre situated in Guwahati:

8) Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp (EAC) at Rangia College:

A three day Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp (EAC) was held at Rangia College from Nov. 19th to 21st, 2008 under the sponsorship of National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), DST, Govt. of India. The programme was organized by Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) in association with Women’s Studies Research Cell and ICGC, Rangia College. Sri A.K. Sarma, Principal i/c, Rangia College inaugurated the camp. Dr. Hitesh Barman, in his speech highlighted the aims and objectives of the camp. Altogether 73 students registered as the participants in the three-day EAC programme. Acting as the resource person, Sri Pranab Sarma, HOD, Centre for Entrepreneurship Education (CEE), IIE discussed the whole programme in detailed. The programme included Entrepreneurial Motivation, importance of entrepreneurship as one of the career option among the students, concept of entrepreneur and entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial opportunities and basics of business plan, planning of SSE, support system for SSE.

9) Popular Talk on Work Culture:

As part of the Annual Lecture Series the Rangia College Employees’ Thrift & Credit Society Ltd. organized a thought provoking popular talk on 16th of December, 2008 on the topic of Work Culture. The topic was considerably relevant to the present day context of the society. Noted educationist and social activist Sri Deven Dutta delivered an illuminating lecture on the proposed topic. Honourable Principal i/c of Rangia College as well as secretary of the society Sri Amarendra Kr. Sarma explained the aims and objectives of the society. The Chairman of the Society Dr. Abdur Rezzaque chaired the meeting.

10) Extension and Educational Activities of the Department of Political Science:

On 17th of December, 2008 the students and teachers of the Department visited some localities of Assam & East Bhutan and the Shashipur village situated at Indo-Bhutan boarder. The aim of the field work was to create Social and Eco-Political awareness related to their ways of live. On 19th of December, 2008 the Political Science Forum organized a “Popular Talk” on the topic of “Role of Judiciary in protecting Human Rights in India”. Mr. Utpal Bhuyan and Mr. Ziaul Haque both the Advocates of Rangia Civil Court were the Resource Person. The Resource persons highlighted the major role of Judiciary in overall protection of Human Rights.

May 2009-April 2010 

During the academic session 2009-10, the institution has given an active consideration to carry out significant extension activities to make aware the students in various areas of subjects and prospect.     

(1) Army Recruitment Programme:

The programme has been organized with the joint effort of NCC Rangia college unit and Army Recruitment Office, Narengi, Guwahati held on 7th August 2009 at the college premises. The programme was guided by Col. Amitabh Joshi, Army Recruitment Office, Narengi, Guwahati. This is a motivational programme to make aware the students to the recruitment of defense services of India. The aim of the programme is to acquaint the student with Army, the carrier prospect & how to join Army.

(2) Chemistry Olympiad, 2009:

The department of Chemistry of this institution organized State Level Chemistry Olympiad, 2009 examination at college on 13-09-2009, Sunday, where 40 students were taken part.

(3) Popular Talk:

As part of the planning for extension activities of this institution, a special talk on the eve of Teachers Day & Literacy Day was held on 14th Sept, 2009 organized by the department of Botany on the topic Value-based Education.  The talk was delivered by Dr. Nirupama Sarma, lecturer, Department of Education. Besides one more popular talk was held on the topic Patent, Biopiracy-an Indian Perspective. The programme was organized in the department of Botany on 7th Nov, 2009 at 12th noon. The talk was delivered by Sanjeev Karmakar, an alumnus of the department, presently working in DRL, Tezpur. 

(4) Seminar on J.M.Lyngdoh Committee Report:

The Department of Political Science organized a seminar on the topic J.M. Lyngdoh Committee Report on 10th Oct, 2009. The seminar was held with a view to make aware the students about the present election process. The session was presided over by Sri Amarendra Kr. Sarma, principal in charge of Rangia College and moderated by Dr. Abdur Rezzeque,HOD,Dept. of Economics. Dr. Dwijendra Nath Deka, Dr. Jyotiraj Pathak and Dr. Madan Ch. Boro, lecturer of this department elaborately discussed the topic. Students, teachers and office staff attended the seminar & took active part in the interaction session of the seminar.

(5) Siddhinath Sarma Memorial Debating Competition:

The Siddhinath Sarma Memorial All Assam Inter College Debating Competition was held at Rangia College on 23rd Oct, 2009. The meeting was presided over by ex. Education Minister and scholar Mr. Ramani Barman. The judges of the Debating Competition were Prof. Sanjib Goswami, Prof. Sushanta Kashyap and Dr. Nirupama Sarma. Numbers of competitors from different colleges took part in the competition.

In the competition, Umi Deka and K.Wary, both students of J.B. Law College, Guwahati, got the Championship Trophy. The Runners up Trophy was awarded to Mridul Barman and Dipankar Bezbaruah of Gauhati College. Three individual prizes were given in the competition. Miss Nikumoni Sarma of Rangia College was awarded the best Debating prize in the Debating Competition. The second prize was given to Debu Narayan Konwar of Sipajhar College and Mridul Barman of Gauhati College received the third prize.

 (6) Seminar on Diplomatic Career and Indian Diplomacy:

 The Department of Political Science organized a seminar on the topic “Diplomatic Career and Indian Diplomacy” on 19th Nov, 2009. The talk was delivered by Resource Person Sri Upendra Chandra Baro, IFS Rtd.( Former Ambassador, Govt. of India).  The seminar was presided over by Sri Amarendra Kr. Sarma, principal i/c, Rangia College. Sri Baro delivered lecture on Career of Diplomat and Diplomacy & highlighted all the vital points related to the topic especially for the students. In his lecture, he asked the students to pay more attention in their studies, to learn English well; reading habit should develop, to study Journals and Periodicals besides hard work. Specially, participants thrill to take part in the interactive session to show their eagerness to know the subject very well. All the students, teachers and office staff attended the lecture with great enthusiasm.

(7) Awareness Camp on Leadership Quality building (Vijay Hi Vijay Programme):

As a part of the extension activities programme, a state level leadership project for ignited youth namely ‘Vijay Hi Vijay’ (Victory and Victory) was held in Rangia College. The project was organized by Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Art and Culture, Guwahati in association with Rangia. The institute is a spiritually oriented service organization serving with twin ideals of ‘Man making’, ‘Nation building’ and ‘Service man serve God’. The aim of the programme is (i) To understand the greatness of our history, (ii) To draw inspiration from our golden epochs and courageous personalities, (iii) Response to the need of the society through organized action oriented work (iv) Build our will to work consistently. Thus leadership quality develops through clarity, inspiration, spirituality and conviction.

The workshop completed in three phases, comprised of (i) Book-based examination & interaction on 5th Nov, 2009; (ii) One-day camp on 15th Nov, 2009 from 11am to 3.30 pm includes lecture& yoga sessions & (iii) The third phase is a concluding session leaded by the teacher coordinators Sri Mukul Kalita and Dr. Snigdha Sarkar, and Sri Jyotish Das, Yoga faculty of the college. Sri Amarendra Kr. Sarma, principal i/c, inspired the students with his valuable words.

(8) Lecture on Anaemia: 

An awareness programme on the topic Anaemia and Health was organized by Womens’ Studies Research Cell in collaboration with Health Care Unit of this institution on November 23rd, 2009. The programme was made convenient with the lecture delivered by a group of Doctors. They explained about the causes of Anaemia and its affects on health. The resource persons, Dr. Chandradhar Deka, SDMO, Dr. Bharat Baishya of Rangia Civil Hospital, Sri Bhaben Ch Lahkar & Imdad Ali, Lecturers of Rangia College explained about various causes, types and also the preventive measures of Anaemia.

(9) Popular talk on Palliative Care:

 Under the aegis of the Department of Zoology & Botany of this institution awareness talk on Palliative Care was held at the college premises on 16th Dec, 2009.  The talk was delivered by Dr. Kabindra Bhagabati and Sri Hari Prasad Bora from the Gauhati Pain and Palliative Care Society (GPPCS), Uzanbazar, Guwahati. The resource persons spoke on various aspects of palliative care and their importance when the cancer patient attains the terminal stage of the disease. As the palliative care was a new concept, the participants showed enthusiasm to the subject matter.

(10) Lecture on Folklore:

 As a part of its popular lecture series under the aegis of Rangia College Employees’ Co-operate Thrift and Credit Society Limited, the third popular lecture on Historical elements in Folklore materials was held on 29th December, 2009 at Rangia College. Former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, litterateur and noted folklorist Dr. Birendra Nath Dutta delivered lecture on the topic of “Historical elements in Folklore materials with special reference to the folklore materials extent in the wide range areas of Rangia sub-division. Revealing the importance of oral tradition, the resource person made attention to the preservation of the rich folklore genre. Further the resource person threw light on the lives of martyrs Haradutta and Biradutta and also on the historical Raijmel.

(11) Poet Meet:  

Under the aegis of Rangia College Students’ Union and the literary unit ‘Dhwani’ (Echo) jointly organized a day-long Poetry Festival to popularize the poetry among the students community. The programme was held on Noted Assamese poet Dr. Nilim Kumar and hundred of students of this institution participated and read out their favourite poems in the poetry festival. Speaking on the occasion, the moderator Dr. Phukan Ch. Basumatary opined that poems are not just the flow or outburst of emotions; rather symbolizes the great culture and literature of a community. Assamese poems are at present in front runner stage with all vividity of poetic skills, he said highlighting the contributions of the poets towards keeping the rich Assamese culture in such a height.

(12) Lecture on H1N1:

An awareness lecture programme on H1N1 was arranged by Rangia College NSS unit on 6th January, 2010. Dr. Ava Baruah delivered an extensive and elaborative lecture on H1N1. A large number of students as well as the volunteers attended the occasion. The Program officer of NSS presided over the programme and expressed the needs of such lecture in the college.

(13) Women’s Day Observed:

 International Women’s Day was observed by the Womens’ Studies Research Cell of Rangia College in association with the local Lekhika Samaroh on 8th March, 2010. As a part of the programme, a public meeting was held at Rangia Raijmel Krishak Swahid Bhawan under the presidenship of Mira Patgiri Sarma, HOD, Dept. of History, Rangia College. The inaugural speech was delivered by Sri Amarendra Kr. Sarma, principal i/c, Rangia College. Distinguished guests Saradi Saikia, a noted Satriya dancer and Deputy Director of Higher Education and Dr. Anima Choudhury, a renowned singer were present as invited guests. They spoke on the occasion. Distinguished women activist Mrs Gouri Prava Mahanta spoke emphasizing the role of women in present social scenario.
